Second Life is a docufiction film about surviving trauma in Afghanistan. The film aims to raise awareness about the mental health impacts from traumatic yet common socio-cultural issues in Afghanistan, namely sexual assault and rape, childhood violence, and abuse faced by women from their mothers-in-law. While these social issues are widely discussed and condemned, people rarely consider their effects on mental health. Second Life shows how these social issues create mental health problems for people including traumatic stress, depression, anxiety, anger, self-harm, and suicidal ideation.
“Trauma might be the most avoided, ignored, belittled, denied, misunderstood, and untreated cause of human suffering.” Peter Levine
